Summary: Being present at work has many benefits. These 3 links will help, or remind, you how to improve being mindful at work.
Thoughts: With the numerous interruptions at work (pings, email, work phone, cell phone, co-worker passing by), I find it difficult to be in the present/moment/now. I found a few articles (Links for Recommended Reading below) that I are inspiring and wanted to share.
Leo’s article states thinking is grouped as something that has happened in the Past, something that may happen in the Future, as well as what is happening in the Present. He states there is nothing we can do about the past (other than learn from it and move on) and we can’t control the future as it could change from what we anticipate. He also states that plans/goals can be prepared for without over-planning, “by being in the moment and rolling with the punches.” What hit home for me was, “If we spend most of our time thinking about the past or future, we are missing life itself. It’s passing us by while we’re elsewhere.” Yikes!
I chuckled at this in Jay’s article, “When we’re at work, we fantasize about being on vacation; on vacation, we worry about the work piling up on our desks.” True dat! Jay defines mindfulness as a “state of active, open, intentional attention on the present…realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts…” He also provides 6 practices in becoming mindful.
And lastly, Shamash has 10 ways to be mindful at work. Those most appealing to me are: Be consciously present; Be a single-tasker; and Use mindful reminders (post-it notes).
I have found the less interruptions and more focus and calm I am, the better business decisions I make for the Bank.
