Summary: A 40 year old “prickly, but in a soft, long-needled way” woman’s story of friendships and it’s place in her life.
Thoughts: The book starts as a difficult read. The main character, May, rambles miscellaneous thoughts from her head with lack of any order. With progression of the book, the interactions with her friends and neighbors began to hold interest and the last chapter is the highlight of the book because there was more substance with less chatter. If you like characters with a sense of quirkiness, then this book is for you. There is also much botanical references as well as Emily Post and Odyssey.

The Yew in Scotland plays a role within the book. An article from The Scotsman provides interesting facts about the tree.
Arthur Vundla and Lizzie Roberts also reported in an article in The Scotsman that the tree’s life is in danger because of tourists taking it’s branches.
